For Britons of a certain age, the name BHS is likely to conjure childhood memories of shopping trips with mum on the hunt for school uniforms and kitchen appliances.

Those people – and their mums – will be delighted to know that in recent years we’ve given BHS a boost to restore it to its status as a British high street family favourite.

Building on our populist foundations – BHS launched in Brixton during the roaring twenties with the draw that nothing cost more than a shilling – we’ve decided that whilst great value products are still top of most people’s list, a dash of contemporary cool only adds to our customer’s experience.

That’s why, when you visit BHS these days, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that the goods you’ve come to expect from BHS – fashion, homewares and lighting – are all still here, but brighter and better than ever.

As if that wasn’t enough, we’ve added to our already diverse portfolio with a host of super new ventures including a lingerie collection, celebrity home ranges and the brilliant Wedding Collection (both available only in selected stores) which we like to think of as a one-stop shop for every bride-to-be. When you look at the big picture, it’s little wonder that BHS now welcomes over 1 million visitors every week into our stores and worldwide franchise operations.

But whilst it's full steam ahead in many areas, good old-fashioned customer care is still our number one goal. Because, after all, it’s nice to know that some things never change.

  • When the first British Home Stores opened its doors in Brixton in 1928, self-service cafés and a plush new food hall (as well as brilliantly priced goods) had customers flooding through the doors.
  • The first BHS store dedicated exclusively to homewares opened for business in 1998. It was located in the aptly named Bath.
  • BHS was the first high street retailer to open in Moscow in 1995. At the time, the £3 million venture was the largest in the brand’s international portfolio and was quickly followed by the opening of a second store in St Petersburg.
  • Over 900,000 customers visit the BHS website every week.
