Profile

Danny Exton
Finance business placement student
Joined Arcadia in July 2007

I am currently studying Business Management at the University of Surrey, and I have chosen to take a year out to complete an industrial placement within Finance. My main motivation towards doing an industrial placement was that I wanted to understand what the “real working world” was all about, and it would also aid me in making up my mind with regards to choosing my career once I have graduated.

I have a huge passion for fashion and have always shopped in Topman, so I decided to take a look at Arcadia’s website to see if they offered any type of programme. To my delight they did, and after reading the website the role appealed to me even more. I wanted something that was structured, but that would also give me the freedom to use my initiative and really develop my skills over the year.

After working hard at the assessment centre I successfully secured a placement within the Finance team at Dorothy Perkins. I was lucky enough to have a really great handover with the candidate doing the role previously, and since then I haven’t looked back. I have been involved in working with the Buying, Merchandising and Central Costing teams, which has given me some excellent exposure to different areas of Finance. The training has been absolutely brilliant and I have attended courses for numerous technical aspects of the role. The team have been amazing and have been really accommodating, and I felt part of the team straight away.

The experiences so far have totally exceeded my expectations, and I have enjoyed immensely putting into practice what I have learnt at university. While I have been given guidance and support by my management team, I feel I have a real sense of responsibility and really feel like a valued member of the team.

I am 100% sure that once I have finished my degree, I will apply to the Finance Graduate programme. The package that Arcadia offers its graduates is extremely appealing, and now knowing what it’s like to be a part of such a fast paced, commercial business I can’t see myself anywhere else.
