Topman are excited to announce the arrival of the Denim Jacket Project.
Available in store and online 5th April, Topman have invited some of the most talented designers from both sides of the Atlantic to refresh and update the classic denim jacket. The line-up is made up of the cream of British Menswear talent who have each shown as part of one of Topman and Fashion East’s initiative MAN, Topman sponsored New Gen Men, or have collaborated with Topman previously. From the UK there are Oliver Spencer, Lou Dalton, Katie Eary and Shaun Samson as well as one of the most talked about talents to emerge from New York in recent times, Mark McNairy. Topman Design rounds up the impressive line-up.
Renowned for mixing quintessential English style with quirky flourishes and attention to detail OLIVER SPENCER is now a label stocked worldwide. For the project his modern take on the denim jacket comes in the form of a navy denim biker complete with a double asymmetric zip fastening and press-stud fastenings to give this wardrobe staple a contemporary look and feel.
Having established herself as a starlet of British Menswear LOU DALTON’S signature aesthetic showcases contemporary classicism and refined tailoring. This is demonstrated perfectly in her design. The detail is all in the threadwork and the wash. Lou has engineered French seams throughout that retain the colour during the washing process and add depth to the jacket.
Royal College of Art graduate KATIE EARY is known for what she describes as ‘glamorous streetwear’. This is abundant throughout her design which entails heavily bleach washed denim with detachable borg collar, gold finish metalwork and a staple Katie Eary bold animal print lining which demonstrates that street couture is at the heart of all her work.
California-born British-trained designer SHAUN SAMSON’S design is instantly recognisable through the juxtaposition of two different fabrics sitting together. In keeping with Shaun's most recent AW12 MAN catwalk show the jacket has a washed denim front and an unexpected sports mesh on the back. The mesh adds dimension to the denim jacket because of the illusion it creates with whatever is worn under it. The jacket is for both covering up and revealing.
Supported by the strength of a cult following of dedicated, fashion-forward young men around the globe, New York’s MARK MCNAIRY has risen from under-the radar to recently being named as one of GQ’s Best New Menswear Designers in America. Mark’s design encompasses a cut and sew raw denim jacket, fusing two seemingly different jackets together to create one.
The TOPMAN DESIGN interpretation is a modern take on a classic 1930’s one pocket denim jacket. Originally a staple piece of workwear the early denim jackets were hard-wearing and functional with riveted pockets and a boxy fit. The Topman Design update stays true to these origins and the addition of an all over polka dot print makes this classic shape more contemporary.
‘We all own or have owned one but this project is the perfect excuse to re-evaluate the most iconic of all wardrobe staples The Denim Jacket. Left to the dexterous hands of 6 leading Menswear Designers we have reinvention on a great scale. Trompe l'oeil, overprinting and meshing put the Denim Jacket centre stage once again.’ GORDON RICHARDSON, TOPMAN DESIGN DIRECTOR.
The denim jackets will be available in selected Topman stores, independent boutiques globally and online at Topman.com and will retail at £70.
