A key part of being a responsible retailer is to minimise our environmental impacts. In the process of bringing our goods to market, we need to be mindful of the potential impacts our business can have.

Once made, our products need to be transported, sold in stores that require lighting and a comfortable environment, all of which is supported by our teams in our head offices.

In this pillar we focus specifically on energy, waste and transport. Our working groups in these areas liaise internally with Property, Purchasing and Logistics and with external consultants who assist us with tracking progress against our targets.

Our long-term commitments continue to be to:

• Lower our energy consumption (and reduce CO2 emissions);

• Identify waste streams and work to reduce these;

• Reduce our consumption of other valuable resources such as water; and

• Transport our products while reducing impact on the environment.

Since the launch of Fashion Footprint we have been committed to making improvements in all these areas. While our initiatives continue to move into a more mature phase when outputs have become incremental rather than substantial, we have progressed all our targeted projects for this year.

For the ninth consecutive year we have managed to reduce our absolute CO2 emissions, achieving a further 8% reduction this year.

We have reached significant milestones in two major projects this year.

The transformation of our London headquarters is complete, which we celebrated with an opening event in early September. This three-year project has created a stunning 21st century workplace to both excite and inspire our people as well as make on-going contributions to reduced environmental impacts via its use of cutting-edge building materials and systems.

Meanwhile, we completed the pilot phase of our new Singapore distribution centre, which is streamlining the production pipeline between manufacturing source and the consumer.

Colegrave House refurbishment

As we marked the completion of Fashion Footprint’s tenth anniversary year, we celebrated another milestone: the total transformation of our London head office, Colegrave House.

The building’s metamorphosis has resulted in a state-of-the-art workplace with best-in-class environmental credentials that has transformed the working lives of our employees.

Internally the building is all but unrecognisable while environmentally it is at the cutting edge. One of the most ambitious projects has been to glaze over the internal quadrangle, creating additional floor space and improved sightlines across the building.

This has significantly increased the natural light available within the third floor area, the final space to be unveiled and the one that has seen the biggest transformation.

Home to the employee restaurant and bar, there are also break out spaces, seating that doubles as a theatre space for catwalks and presentations, as well as a nail and hair bar. A helical staircase links the third to sixth floors internally and walkways look out across the space, giving teams on different floors a sense of connection.

The building boasts upgraded heating, ventilation and air conditioning, all controlled by an intelligent Building Management System (BMS). We intend to gather the outputs from the BMS in the coming year to set a benchmark against which we can measure future performance.

The BMS is responsible for maintaining a constant temperature while delivering energy savings. The latest heating and ventilation technology has been employed with the most efficient and environmentally friendly gases employed in the air conditioning systems.

New electrical systems ensure energy consumption via computer screens, printers and lighting is minimised. For instance, when sunlight is sufficient to illuminate the atrium area, perimeter lighting is switched off to make greatest use of natural light. Lighting across the building is set to respond to movement and dims when areas are unoccupied. Hot water taps have been installed in kitchen areas to prevent the need to continually re-boil kettles.

A best-in-class water management system controls constant hot water, on/off tap sensors and dual flush toilets. Meanwhile, aerated showerheads further reduce water consumption.

The new restaurant is playing its part in reducing waste, employing its own bio-digester that turns food waste into grey water within a matter of hours so that it can be disposed via the drains.

Improved bike storage and showering facilities mean employees can reduce the impact of their commute, while improved audio and video conferencing facilities are reducing business miles travelled.
