Meet the Team Spencer Dennis

Where were you before you joined Topshop?

I had just graduated from uni and was working part time in-store for GAP. I’d never worked for any of the Arcadia brands before but I had always wanted to work at Topshop.

When did you decide you wanted to work in fashion?

I’ve always had a passion for fashion and wanted to pursue it as a career but never thought there would be a career path into fashion other than Buying. I’ve always loved numbers and strategical thinking, so when I found an MAA role on the graduate site, it seemed like a perfect fit. After reading the job description and understanding the Merchandising side of fashion, I knew that I wanted this for the long term.

What’s the best part of your job? Do you have a particular career highlight to date?

The best part about my job, is that no day is similar and everyday you learn something new. It really does feel like you’re progressing in your career. My particular career highlight to date, would be when my Merchandiser praised me on an spreadsheet which was clear and concise. Before coming into this role, I was not an Excel whizz, so to be praised about my skillset showed how much I’ve learnt regarding the software and how this shone through my work.

What do you love about working at Topshop?

When I first got the job, I thought it was going to be very corporate with a hierarchy which tells people who they need to listen to, but actually when I started working on my team (and not to say it’s a chilled environment!) people are fun, it’s a great environment to work in – it doesn’t feel like 9-5. You can go out and be social with people inside and outside of your team. Putting aside the social aspect, there’s so much opportunity for you to progress and develop yourself. When I first started, my Merchandiser said to me that there’s Excel courses and that I should take advantage of any extra training courses. At the time, I took it as I’m lacking skills and I need to learn something but looking back, it wasn’t them telling me that I was missing anything it was more for you to seize the opportunity and make the most out of your development. I like the fact they don’t just want you to be in a particular role for a set number of years, querying whether you’ll actually progress.

What is your ultimate goal?

There’s so much more beyond my role, I’ve only realised this during the last six months while I’ve truly got to know Merchandising. Obviously you can move to be a head of a department or even become a Merchandising or Fashion Director. I would say for a realistic point of view, my end goal is to become a Merchandiser and anything else which comes after that is a bonus. An Established Merchandiser working for a good company whether that be Topshop or elsewhere, just excelling at what I do best.

What has been the best thing you've used your staff discount on?

I found this really good denim jacket from Topman which was everything I had wanted. This one was oversized, had distressed detail and it was the perfect colour so it went with all my other outfits. It was an absolute bargain because I was actually able to use our Christmas discount on it which meant it was almost half price! I’ve worn it all year round and I love it.
